Cosmopolitan Communication: Less Vitriol; More Common Ground

Oct. 24, 2022 9p

(WGTD)---On WGTD’s Education Matters program last weekend, a retired college professor promoted a form of communication that’s designed to reduce conflict and make conversations more productive.

Arthur Jensen is the author of “A Call to Cosmopolitan Communication: A Narrative of Richness and Mystery.”

Speaking with Parkside Communications Prof. Jonathan Shailor, Jensen acknowledged that applying the theory of Cosmopolitan Communication in real-life situations doesn’t always lead to gratifying results for everyone, but it helps. "What a Cosmopolitan approach asks us to do is to look at more than one point of view and recognize that our own values don't have to suffer because someone else has a different belief or a different way of thinking," he said.

Jensen is a strong advocate for teaching the precepts of Cosmopolitan Communication at a young age. He says schools around the country report positive results when the theory is taught and applied on a regular basis.  "When that's done repeatedly...the kids start to call themselves 'Cosmo Kids,'" Jensen said. "It's really have an impact."
