Kenosha County District Attorney's Office is Still Short on Prosecutors, But the Roster is Growing

(WGTD)---A rebuilding process in the Kenosha County District Attorneys Office is continuing.

District Attorney Xavier Solis went before the county Board’s Judiciary and Law Enforcement Committee this week. He fielded a number of questions on a wide range of issues.

Part of the discussion focused on staffing. The office lost a number of experienced prosecutors in the transition between retired D-A Michael Graveley and Solis, who was elected last November and took office in early January.

The roster of prosecutors currently stands at 12, which is a little more than half of its allotted roster of 21-and-a-half prosecutors. But several more are expected to start this month. "We  will probably have 15 by the end of October," Solis said. To pick up the slack, Solis himself has been spending quite a bit of time in courtrooms.

Prosecutors and public defenders are in short supply throughout the state.

Despite the current shortage, Solis says his office is getting its work done. The office is fully-staffed with paralegals and victim-witness specialists.

In other matters, Solis said his top priorities are prosecuting crimes involving violence and crimes with children as victims. Solis also said he doesn’t anticipate ICE spending much time here because he says his focus already extends to undocumented defendants who’ve committed crimes. "My office is focused on illegal aliens committing crimes and ensuring that we get ICE holds on them," he said.

Absent from the Wednesday night meeting was the county’s chief administrative judge, Chad Kerkman, who had registered complaints about the D-A’s office at the last meeting of the committee.  Kerkman said at the time that he planned to attend.
