Kenosha's Shalom Center to Expand

June 16, 2019 9p; Updated June 20

(WGTD)---The Kenosha Plan Commission gave preliminary approval Thursday night for an expansion of the Shalom Center, the city’s primary shelter for homeless people.

The proposed nearly 10,000 square foot addition would allow the non-profit to consolidate its operations and move its food pantry on Sheridan Rd. to its new site on 39th Ave. Either the city or the water utility is expected to buy the pantry building, as its adjacent to the utility’s storm water retention facility.

The project also includes renovating some existing, unused space to allow for a reconfiguration of the part of the shelter dedicated to housing women.

The project does not call for an increase in the overall number of beds.
